New Wave of Arguments about Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh)

I would like to talk about this new wave of arguments about Caucasus conflict zone. The trigger appears to be the statement of Uruguay Foreign Minister Luis Almagro made during his visit to Armenia. Mr. Almagro stated, “Nagorno-Karabakh is a historical Armenian land.” He also mentioned that Artsakh must be recognized either as an independent state or part of Armenia.

More supporters stand for the international recognition of Artsakh. In September, Artsakh Parliament Member Ashot Ghulyan participated in a solemn ceremony in the US Congress, which was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of proclamation of Artsakh Republic.

During the meeting with former U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Marshall Evans at Golden Tulip Yerevan hotel by Civilitas Foundation, Mr. Evans responded to the question concerning Nagorno-Karabakh said, ”Cooperation between France, Russia, and the US has been at all times very good and, at times super, and it continues so with our new mediator.”

I want to say that while foreign countries continue to think what position to take in this conflict, there have been other ceasefire violations on the Armenian-Azeri border. On October 5, two Armenian soldiers were severely wounded in Chinari village, and another soldier died of gunshots in Artsakh.

However, President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, while in Armenia on Thurday/Friday, confirmed that France and the EU will intensify their role in the process of the conflict solution.

Let’s follow the development of the events.
